About Sumometrics Industries Inc.
Sumometrics Industries Inc. was established by Mr. Richard Albert Y. Lim, the company’s President and CEO, in 2011. The company is regarded as one of the pioneer-providers of earthquake recording instruments in the industry
In its first two years of operations, the company resorted to educating the industry on the usefulness of its seismic monitoring system through business presentations and product demonstrations to building owners, major property developers, building management associations, and building managers, and participation in trade shows.
Since most of the buildings in the country are compliant with the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, Mr. Lim decided to partner with American company Refraction Technology, also known as “Reftek”.
Refraction Technology, now a subsidiary of Trimble Navigation, has been in the seismic and structural monitoring business for the past 35 years. Reftek is one of the suppliers of the United States Advanced National Seismic Systems (ANSS), which is under the United States Geological Survey.
The American company’s extensive knowledge and experience in monitoring structures like building, dams, bridges, ground motion, volcanoes, and other structures were the factors considered by Mr. Lim to introduce Reftek’s products in the Philippine market.
Sumometrics aims to provide useful data recorded by its equipment installed on the top, in the middle, and in the basement floors of a building during an earthquake.
Useful critical information, such as Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS), Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) Scale, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Acceleration, Raw Acceleration, Velocity, etc., can be seen immediately after an earthquake.
The system seems like installing a ‘black box’ inside the building to record all movements and behaviors of the structure during an earthquake. In-depth analyses of the data recorded, such as the Maximum Acceleration, Spectral Intensity, Predominant Period, Mean Period, 2PI*Vmax/ Amax, Maximum Velocity, Maximum Displacement, Cum Abs Velocity, Arias Intensity, Arias Duration (5-75), Arias Duration (5-95), JMA intensity, MMI scale, and PEIS are broken down to three axis movement: vertical, longitudinal, and traverse.
All these information can be seen as raw files waveform or numerical files. These are the important critical results that can be utilized by structural engineers using structural engineering software.
To date, Sumometrics has already installed seismic accelerograph system in almost all types of building structures, from single to multiple buildings sharing a common podium or basement, casinos, banks, residential buildings, and mixed use towers around Metro Manila.
Clients can attest to Sumometrics’ superior standards of installat
